YouTube Uglifies Embedded Videos With A Search Bar

That is one fugly search bar that YouTube added (without warning) to embedded videos. Update: if you want to turn it off, simply add the parameter "&showsearch=0". More information here. Also, the site itself received a facelift, one that I'm not loving. (original story)

In The Face Of Weakening Demand, Adobe Sheds 600 Workers

Today, Adobe announced it would lay off 600 workers, or 8 percent of its total headcount. The recession is forcing it to reduce its sales forecasts for the next two quarters. No wonder it canceled its booth at Macworld. When the big guys are hurting, everybody hurts. That brings our Layoff Tracker up to 76,000 tech jobs lost since late August. Adobe joins Leapfrog, which announced on Monday it will cut 70 people (10 percent) and Trutap, which will let 25 people go (80 percent) and is looking to sell the remains of the company. Hey, Apple’s Lawyers. Here Is Some Free Advice On How To Fight That iPhone Browser Lawsuit

When a company called EMG Technology filed a patent lawsuit against Apple last week over "the way the iPhone navigates the Internet," it had the stench of a patent troll. The suit was filed, a month after the patent was issued, in the Eastern District of Texas, known as troll country among patent attorneys because the courts there tend to rule favorably for patent owners. EMG Technology is based in Los Angeles, and appears to have been formed solely for the purpose of filing this lawsuit. One of the inventors named on the patent and EMG "managing member" Elliot Gottfurcht is a Los Angel... (original story)

TechMeme Gives Up On Fully Automated News

3+ year old TechMeme, an automated news site that shows breaking news clustered by topic, has always generated "headlines" by analyzing how news sites link to each other. If a lot of sites start linking to something unique, TechMeme guesses it's news. That isn't working, says founder Gabe Rivera today in a blog post: "Only an algorithm would feature news about Anna Nicole Smith's hospitalization after she's already been declared dead, as our automated celeb news site WeSmirch did last year." He's hired someone to start vetting stories that the algorithm says are headlines, to either push th... (original story)
