DEMO Spring 2010 officially kicks off on Monday morning, but at the welcome reception earlier tonight, we got a chance to meet with some of the companies that will be presenting their products over the next two days. One of those companies is Zerista, which is a tool that lets groups, clubs, teams and organizations build their own mobile optimized applications. Think of it as a private Facebook/Foursquare/Twitter mash-up.What we like about Zerista is that it can integrate with your existing social networks, while also creating a web-based (and mobile optimized) network for communicating news, sharing messages, doing mobile check-in and even collecting payments for tickets or dues. You create the application and provide details about who your members are, any custom maps you want to include (that can replace generic Google Maps) and any activity calendars or events. You can also select what type of privacy and sharing options you want — so you can designate if communication shared in the group is also shared outside to other networks or to the public at large. While some might not see the point in building a custom social app, we can already think of several situations that would really benefit from such a system. For instance, I was in a sorority in college and trying to track down meetings, locations for philanthropy events — not to mention collecting dues — was something that even in the early Facebook era wasn’t well optimized.Having a mobile-accessible network that can be private — but also integrate with large public networks would make that management process less complicated and also make it easier for group members to find out what’s going on and communicate with one another. Zerista is open for beta now.Reviews: Facebook, Foursquare, Google Maps, TwitterTags: demo, demospring10, mobile apps, social media, social networks, zerista » original news

On Sunday night, the House of Representatives passed a $875 billion healthcare bill with a vote of 219-212. While discussion of the news is currently dominating the social web, a specific moment from the proceedings is also getting attention - a member of the House yelling out "baby killer" as Rep. Bart Stupak was speaking.According to Trendistic, about 0.4 percent of all tweets from 11-12PM ET contained the phrase (about 2 percent included "HCR" - the acronym for healthcare reform). The moment is reminiscent of back in September, when Rep. Joe Wilson shouted out "You Lie!" during a speech delivered by President Obama. At this point, it's not known who uttered the "baby killer" comment. Whoever it was though will likely become something of Internet lore - Wilson's outburst made him the 7th most discussed person on Twitter in all of 2009 and has been the subject of numerous video parodies and mashups (he had the misfortune of having an outburst around the same time as Kanye West). The “baby killer” comment can be heard at around the 7 second mark in the video below:Tags: bart stupak, healthcare reform, Joe Wilson, video, viral video, youtube » original news

Canada's Public Mobile -- one of the wireless start-ups to benefit from the country's AWS spectrum auction -- has started detailing its launch plans this week behind its contemporaries at WIND Mobile and Mobilicity. These guys are being totally forthcoming about the fact that they're targeting the lower end of the market, a segment they claim to be "underserved" by the big guys (we're sure Koodo, Fido, and Virgin would all disagree) -- even going so far as to make their launch announcement in an area of Toronto ominously described as "hardscrabble." So what's the deal? Stores are open immediately to the tune of 15 in Toronto and another 10 in Montreal, the only markets Public Mobile says it's going to target for now, with service launching in mid-May to the tune of CAD $40 (about $39) a month for unlimited talk and text. That's great pricing, but obviously, great pricing means nothing without a great network to go along with -- so we'll see how this shakes out in a few weeks' time.Public Mobile launching in mid-May: 'you're not going to see us at Yorkville' originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 15:25:00 EST.
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/microsoft/Taking_the_Windows_Phone_7_Series_emulator_for_a_test_drive'; If you've been following the news about Microsoft's reinvention of its mobile presence, Windows Phone 7 Series, chances are you heard about how the company's developer-friendly emulator was... modified slightly by Dan Ardelean to expose a series of applications and hubs that you weren't supposed to see yet. Microsoft was quite gracious about it, indicating it basically expected this would happen and simply reminded everyone that these newly discovered apps are far from complete. With that in mind, let's take a look at the unlocked version of the OS, and we'll spell out for you exactly how you can do the same to see it for yourself.Continue reading Taking the Windows Phone 7 Series emulator for a test drive (video)Taking the Windows Phone 7 Series emulator for a test drive (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 20 Mar 2010 11:58:00 EST.
We actually haven't seen any official shots of the Office apps for Windows Phone 7 Series, but now that Microsoft's emulator has been hacked and unlocked, we've got a glimpse of what creating a Word doc in OneNote looks like -- and while there's a high probability that this a super-early version of the app, it's still revealing in how drastically minimal it is. Microsoft says most people just want to make minor edits and leave comments to Office docs while on the go, not make large edits with copy and paste, so we'd expect to see track changes in the final version, but something tells us the main interface isn't going to look tremendously different than this. One more shot and the video with Word after the break -- hit the source for the second vid with Excel.Continue reading Word, Excel and OneNote for Windows Phone 7 Series revealedWord, Excel and OneNote for Windows Phone 7 Series revealed originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 09:07:00 EST.
Here you go, folks, an official statement from Redmond itself on the perennial Windows Phone 7 Series / copy-and-paste discussion. First and foremost, from the onset, there will be no copy and paste in the traditional sense; Microsoft is hoping to bypass the issue by integrating into the OS contextual, single-tap instances for viewing an address on a map (let's hope it has some good recognition algorithms here), doing Bing searches based on highlighted terms, dial a phone number, and so on. But the book isn't entirely closed here, apparently, as the statement goes on to say the company "will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear." We've also got a statement regarding the hacked emulator, to which a representative told us, "we have been very clear that [it] is based on early code and is not reflective of the final user experience," which is a nice way of saying don't get your hopes up on those fun little surprises (task manager, anyone?). Full statements after the break.Continue reading Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 series 'will not initially offer copy and paste,' case-specific actions integrated into OSMicrosoft: Windows Phone 7 series 'will not initially offer copy and paste,' case-specific actions integrated into OS originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 18:41:00 EST. Still with a consumer-focused, BlackBerry slider rumored to be making its first appearance next month at RIM's own WES show, well, who knows. Really, does anybody know?
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Palm_this_is_your_survival_guide'; Oh Palm. Just a little over a year ago your future seemed so bright, so renewed. You walked away from CES 2009 reborn, held aloft by a completely innovative new mobile operating system, a striking piece of hardware, and a feeling amongst the press and investors that you were back in the game and playing to win. Now, less than a year and a half later, you've nearly returned to the dark and desperate place you'd found yourself in at the end of 2008; a rapidly declining mindshare, the bottom falling out of your stock, and bad dips in phone sales. All of it is leaving you backed into a corner where the common perception now is that you've got to sell to survive at all. So what went wrong? How did such a promising launch lead to such a disappointing reality? And how can you wrestle your way back from the brink yet again? Is that even an option? In 2007 the editors of Engadget penned an impassioned open letter to the company, pleading for many of the changes we eventually saw at Palm. This isn't a follow-up, but it's very much in the spirit. We're going to take a look at the missteps that put the company in its current spot, and talk about what we think can pull it back out. Palm, it's time for a little tough love... again.Continue reading Palm: this is your survival guidePalm: this is your survival guide originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 17:04:00 EST.

Google's obsession with speed is well-documented. One of the primary design principles behind its search engine is to return results as fast as possible and strip away anything extra. But its need for speed goes well beyond search. All of Google's apps are optimized for speed (well, except Gmail lately, but they promise to fix that). The Chrome browser is extremely fast, and the upcoming Chrome OS is also expected to make Web browsing and other computing tasks zippier. It almost doesn't matter if Google's Chrome browser and OS gain significant market share or not, as long as they push other browsers and operating systems to keep up in the speed race. Google's need for speed boils down to one very simple thing: money. It realized long ago that every millisecond improvement in pageload times on its search engine resulted in more searches, and thus more search ads served and clicked on. The opposite is also true. Google once did a study showing that delays of 100 to 400 millisecond in showing search results translated into up to 0.6 percent searches. Multiply that across the billions of searches done on Google and it starts to add up to real money, perhaps tens of millions of dollars per quarter. » original news

Dual Electronics' XGPS300 was originally announced way back in November of last year, and after a minor hiccup in January, we're finally able to plop down $199.95 to snag a window-sucking cradle with an inbuilt GPS receiver, rechargeable battery, amplified speaker and NavAtlas US / Canada map app. So, what'll it be? This, or one of those perfectly acceptable $99 PNDs? If you're smart, you'll tune in next week for our review before making any rash decisions.[Thanks, Bridget]Dual Electronics iPod touch GPS dock ships at long last originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 20 Mar 2010 06:13:00 EST.
Last year, OneRiot ventured into the advertising world with RiotWise, an ad format which places content in an emphasized position in their realtime feed. The search engine also launched a pilot program of RiotWise Trending Ads, a stream of ads that correspond to trending topics as they emerge across the social web, that has since been integrated into the search engine's API. Today, the realtime search startup is improving upon its advertising product by offering Trending Ad unit that automatically updates in realtime corresponding to the the most popular trending topics at the time. The ability to update in realtime allows OneRiot to show advertiser content that is relevant to trending topics as they emerge on networks like Twitter, Facebook and the web. The ads are available via standard-size IAB Ad Units and is enabled by OneRiot's realtime search technology and PulseRank relevancy algorithm. And previously, OneRiot's "Trending Ads" were available only via OneRiot's API. This meant that developers had to integrate the raw feed into their applications, and create their own UI. The new ad unit allows any website currently monetizing with standard static ad units to display RiotWise Trending Ads. » original news

Until now, anybody who wanted to implement real-time ads from OneRiot's RiotWise network had to get these ads through OneRiot's API and create a customized user interface around these ads. This severely limited OneRiot's appeal for website owner who wanted to experiment with real-time ads on their sites and services but were looking for a plug and play solution. Today, OneRiot is launching a new set of real-time ads that website owners can just plug into their sites. These dynamic ads will refresh automatically and display relevant ads based on the topics that are trending on the Internet right now. SponsorFor now, these new RiotWise display ad units are only available by requesting access directly from OneRiot. Chances are that the company will make it easier to get access to these ads in the near future. OneRiot is targeting these new ad units at services that are already in the real-time ecosystem, including social networks, real-time meme trackers and other social sharing services. Some of the services that currently use OneRiot's ads through the company's API include Digsby, ÜberTwitter and a number of real-time search engines.According to OneRiot these ads lead to "click through rates at four times industry norms." While we can't verify this data, it doesn't come as a surprise that these ads, which usually point to interesting and relevant content on OneRiot's partner sites would have high click-through rates, especially if users are already on news site or are using a browser-based Twitter tool. On the other hand, we also don't know what kind of payout website owners can expect from these ads, so a higher click-through rate could still mean that publishers end up earning just as much money from RiotWise as they currently do from AdSense or similar programs.Discuss » original news
